LOS ANGELES—Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx was among the winners at inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards which was broadcast Sunday evening. The ceremony honored superhero, science-fiction/fantasy, horror, action and animation movies and television programming.
Foxx won for best voice actor in an animated movie for supplying the voice of Joe Gardner, a passionate jazz pianist and music teacher whose soul gets separated from his body after an open manhole accident in the Pixar computer-animated fantasy comedy-drama "Soul."
"Soul" also had the best voice actress in an animated movie winner, Tina Fey, who supplied the voice of 22, a soul trapped in the great beyond with a dim view of life. "Soul" also won for best animated movie.
The science fiction romantic comedy "Palm Springs" was also a three- time winner, winning for best science fiction/fantasy movie, best actor in a science fiction/fantasy movie (Andy Samberg) and best actress in a science fiction/fantasy movie (Cristin Milioti).
The movie winners were "Da 5 Bloods" for best action movie, "The Old Guard" for best superhero movie and "The Invisible Man" for best horror movie.
The other movie acting winners were Delroy Lindo ("Da 5 Bloods") for best actor in an action movie; Betty Gilpin of "The Hunt" for best actress in an action movie; "Birds of Prey" castmates Ewan McGregor and Margot Robbie for best actor and best actress in a superhero movie; Elisabeth Moss ("The Invisible Man") for best actress in a horror movie; Vince Vaughn ("Freaky") for best actor in a horror movie; and Jim Carrey for best villain in a movie for his portrayal of Doctor Robotnik in "Sonic The Hedgehog."
The top television winner was Amazon Prime Video's "The Boys," winning for best superhero series, best actor in a superhero series (Antony Starr), best actress in a superhero series (Aya Cash) and best villain in a series (Starr).
The superhero categories also included comic book- and video game- inspired movies.
A Legacy Award was presented during the ceremony by the Critics Choice Association to the "Star Trek" franchise, recognizing "the cultural impact it has had across multiple decades while continuing to appeal to and grow its loyal fanbase with new stories and characters."
Patrick Stewart and Sonequa Martin-Green accepted the honor. Stewart won for best actor in a science fiction/fantasy series for "Star Trek: Picard."
The remotely produced ceremony was hosted by actor/director/writer Kevin Smith and actress/writer Dani Fernandez.
The nominees were chosen by committees of Critics Choice Association members who specialize in the various genres. Winners were decided by members who had viewed the nominated series and films.
