NEW YORK (AP)—Elvis and Whitney, Prince and Biggie. And now, Aretha.
The funerals and public memorials of music royalty have been as varied as the work they created. Some were private affairs and others lasted days with tributes around the world.
The body of James Brown went through three wardrobe changes. Sam Cooke's body was on public view in Los Angeles for three days. More than 80,000 people descended on the procession route for Elvis Presley in Memphis. And Janis Joplin? She set aside $2,500 for a party.
Maya Angelou wrote a poem for Michael Jackson's funeral and Whitney Houston's send-off lasted four hours.
